CARE OF KIDNEYS

Kidney disease affects millions of people worldwide including many children who may be at risk at an early age. Each year, 2nd Thursday of March is celebrated as World Kidney Day. The idea is to globally raise awareness about Kidneys, reduce the frequency and impact of Kidney diseases and its associated health problems. The Kidneys are vital organs which perform amazing functions which keeps the body in good state of health. The theme for 2016 focuses on “KIDNEY DISEASE AND CHILDREN: ACT EARLY TO PREVENT IT”. It is crucial that early detection and healthy life style in children starting from birth continuing through to old age by combating the rise in preventable kidney damage including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, inborn and acquired disorder of kidney. Children have a long way to live and prosper in life. Any disease or disability affecting children has its natural course and complications more as compared to adults. Trauma such as burns, dehydration, bleeding, injury or surgery leads to low blood pressure resulting in sufficient blood supply to the kidneys leading to acute kidney injury in children. Children born with one kidney or abnormal kidney, hereditary kidney disease, infections, other diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and urine blockage are the main reasons of chronic kidney disease in children. Respiratory tract Infections in special and others in general ,often complicate and have damaging effect on child’s kidneys .Kidney diseases are silent killers which largely affect the quality of life. The following simple preventive measures provide relief and permanently safe and healthy kidneys;

CARE OF KIDNEYS:
· Keeping fit and active helps to reduces the risk of Kidney Disease.

· Eating healthy diet and keeping weight in check helps to prevent Diabetes, Heart Disease and other associated complications leading to Kidney Disease.

· Salt intake in diet is very important and reduced intake keeps the kidneys healthy.

· Moderate intake of liquids reduces the risk of decline in kidney functions. Water intake should be modified according to climatic changes and physical body status.

· Smoking has bad effect on kidney’s blood flow so it must be avoided.

· Promptly treat infections in children to avoid kidney damage. Never take any drug without prescription even commonly used pain killers, multivitamins, etc.
