Care of Sciatica


Low back pain is a very common problem and Sciatica is one type. It is the pain which is felt at lower back and radiates to hips and along the whole length of the leg. Typically it is felt on one side. It occurs when the vertebral disc, bone spurs or the narrowed spinal canal compresses the nerves supplying the back and leg. The pressure on the nerves causes inflammation, pain and numbness in the affected leg. The pain varies from mild ache to sharp, burning sensation or excruciating pain. It may feel like a jolt or electric shock which may worsen by cough or sneeze. Diseases like Diabetes damage the nerves ,Osteoporosis or weakness of the bones leads to weakness of spine and compression of the nerves. Young people usually have sciatica after lifting very heavy weights, prolonged sitting in odd postures of the spines. Obesity is also an important risk factor in which lower spine has to bear the stress of extra weight. Inactive and sedentary life style poses high risk of sciatica. Prolonged nerve compression in sciatica may lead to permanent weak legs with loss of urine and stool control. The following strategies are helpful to prevent the Sciatica;

CARE OF SCIATICA:

· Spine and posture care are very important in preventing Sciatica.

· Regular physical activity and exercise keeps the spine healthy.

· Avoid lifting heavy weights and working with an odd posture of spine.

· Maintain healthy weight to reduce extra stress on spine.

· Always sit with an erect back to avoid sciatica. 

. Patients suffering from chronic diseases must ensure good control and regular physical activity.
