Hernia is a very common problem which is usually come acrossed by many of us. It occurs when an internal part of the body or organ pushes through an opening or weak spot in the muscles wall. Normally it is seen as a swelling anywhere on the abdomen which comes and goes. It appears on coughing, crying or any other activity where pressure inside abdomen is increased. Congenital weakness of abdominal muscles, excessive crying, severe diarrhea, heavy weight lifting, persistent cough, constipation, difficulty in passing urine, at operation site, or any other cause leading to persistent raised pressure inside the abdominal cavity, pushes the tissues or the organs mostly part of the small intestine through the weakened abdominal muscles wall or operation site and can be seen as Hernia. Sometimes, part of stomach also penetrates into the chest through the opening in diaphragm where food pipe enters and joins the stomach. In new born babies swelling appears at the umbilical area or at the inguinal region due to developing muscles when the baby cries or has persistent diarrhea. In young adults severe exercise like heavy weight lifting and constipation are the main reasons of having Hernia. In female’s obesity, multiple pregnancies, surgeries are the reasons of having a Hernia. In old age constipation, persistent cough and urinary difficulties are the main causes of having Hernia. The Hernia usually appears and disappears without any pain or discomfort. Pain and discomfort is felt due to swelling when the hernia is either developing or it gets obstructed. When the swelling becomes hard, painful and does not disappears, then hernia is obstructed which needs immediate medical care and correction by Surgery.
