Heel is the portion of foot below the ankle which is projected backwards because of bone called heel bone. The bone is covered by thick layers of tissues to act as shock absorber and stabilize the foot. Heel pain is usually felt on the sole or the back of heel. Strong muscles from the back of leg are attached on the back side of the heel bone called Achille’s tendon. Pain on the back of heel is due to over stretching or inflammation of this tendon. Pain on the sole of heel is due to sprain or inflammation of the muscle attached to heel called plantar fasciitis. The other causes of heel pain may be gout, local trauma due to wear and tear of heel pad, nerve disease as in diabetes, bone disease or may be stress fracture. The cause depends on how and when the person is having heel pain. The person may feel severe pain and swelling of the heel and inability to rise on toes or walk normally. Fever indicates some infected nature of the underlying disease. Sudden increase or decrease in body weight, improper shoes size, worn shoe heel, flat footwear without heel, poor quality footwear and having soft sole are also important considerations of heel pain.
