Care of Varicose Veins

Oxygen in the air is basically required for all the body functions. It is inhaled and absorbed from the lungs, pumped by heart to all parts of the human body, through a closed network of blood vessels.

The blood vessels present in the legs have valves to prevent backward flow of blood due to gravitational effect. From legs the blood is pumped up to the heart in the form of small columns by the leg muscles.

Any weakness of these valves leads to dilatation due to pooling and swelling of these blood vessels. The pressure causes stretching, thinning of the blood vessels and pain. These enlarged and twisted veins seen on the legs are called Varicose Veins.

The veins are seeing as dark blue swollen and twisted worm like structures on the legs. Prolonged standing, obesity, overweight and pregnancy are the main causes of having varicose veins. A person feels heaviness, burning, itching, tiredness and pain in the legs which becomes worse after standing. Visible swelling on the feet and ankles is also seen.

The skin over these veins changes the color becomes dark, dry thin, scaly and inflamed. The veins may bleed due to trauma or increased pressure inside the veins.

The following simple measures help to prevent and properly manage the varicose veins.

CARE OF VARICOSE VEINS:

· Avoid prolonged periods of standing at a stretch.

· Regular exercise and fiber rich food should be taken to avoid being overweight and obese.

· The pregnant females should do light exercises and avoid abnormal weight gain.

· They should wear compression stocking to avoid pressure on the veins.

· Prop up legs during rest hours.

· Immediately consult your doctor for swelling or pain in legs.
