Nose is the protruded part on the face and performs vital functions
like smell, air conditioning, humidifying, warming and cleaning of
inhaled air. Aesthetically nose carries importance in human personality.
Nasal blockage is a very common condition felt mostly during changing
weather especially in dry, cold seasons of autumn and winter. It is seen
in all age groups irrespective of genetics and geographical variations.
The nasal cavity is the space behind the nose which connects the nasal
orifices to the throat. The bone and cartilage that divide the nasal
cavity in two halves is called nasal septum. The cartilage portion
supports the soft anterior part of the nose and tip. This soft portion
of cartilage is usually slightly bent towards one side in almost 80% of
the people. The soft tissue nasal linings covering the opposite part
from the inside has the ability to expand and contract depending on the
weather conditions in order to purify and make the inhaled air warm at
body temperature. Only severe misalignment of nasal septum causes nasal
blockage. The nasal congestion is more felt on the deviated side leading
to breathing difficulty. Nasal blockage especially at night, headache,
throat irritation, loud breathing, snoring and sleep apnea are the
common symptoms. Sleep apnea is a serious condition in which person
stops breathing during sleep. Recurrent headache, abnormality in sense
of smell, recurrent sinus infections occur due to deviated nasal septum.
Nasal allergy is also a very common reason of having nasal blockage in
which the nasal lining remains inflamed due to environment allergens.
The following strategies are helpful to prevent the nasal blockage;

- Avoid ice cold food and drinks especially at night.
