Hemorrhoids or piles are swollen blood vessels in or around the terminal portion of stool passage. It is an extremely common problem and can occur at any age. About 50% of the people have it sometimes in their lives. Men and women are equally affected mostly between the ages of 45-65 years. The exact cause is unknown. Obesity, pregnancy, constipation, prolonged diarrhea, regular heavy weight lifting, junk foods, lack of water and dietary fiber all lead to piles. They can be internal or external and develop when the veins enlarge , their wall becomes thin, stretched and irritated. They present as painless profuse bleeding when one goes to toilet. Persistent bleeding leads to generalized weakness of the body which needs immediate treatment. Diet plays a very important role in piles. Less water and fiber in diet makes stools hard and needs more straining which puts pressure on veins causing them to swell and protrude out into the stool passage. More fiber and fluids in diet prevents constipation leading to soft stool and less straining. Prolong sitting or standing is also an important contributing factor of piles. The following simple measures help to prevent and properly manage the piles;
CARE OF PILES:
· Regular exercise keeps the body healthy, maintains healthy weight and prevents obesity.
· Plenty of liquids and fiber in diet adds bulk to stools and prevents constipation.
· Fruits and Vegetables are always better than their juices.
· Avoid prolong sitting, standing and lifting heavy weights, to avoid congestion of blood vessels causing piles.
· Any irritation, pain or bleeding on attending toilet must be reported to your doctor.
· Never strain too much on passing stools and consult your doctor if it persists for long.
· The surgical treatments provide an option to prevent blood loss. The permanent cure lies in changing life styles and adding more fiber and liquids in diet.
