Care of Ankle Sprain


Ankle is a joint which joins leg with the foot, seen as prominent bony swellings on the inner and outer side. It is the most stable join in the body which hardly dislocates but sprain is the most common injury seen. Ankle sprain occurs when one rolls, twists or turns ankle inwards or outwards, in an awkward way. The tough bands of tissues hold the ankle bones, stabilize the joint and prevent excessive movements. The ankle sprain occurs when these tough bands are forced beyond their normal range of movement resulting in their abnormal stretch or tear. Mostly the foot is rolled inwards causing injuries to these tough bands present on the outer side of ankle. In severe form of injury there may be associated fracture of the bones. Severe pain around the ankle especially on weight bearing, swelling and restricted movement are the common symptoms. It mostly occurs when one falls causing ankle to twist, awkward landing on foot after jumping, walking or exercising on an uneven surface. A sprained ankle if not treated properly results in repeated sprain causing chronic continuous pain, ankle joint instability and early joint degeneration disease. The following simple measures help to prevent and properly manage the ankle sprain; 


CARE OF ANKLE SPRAIN:

· Warm up before exercise or game prevents ankle and muscular sprain.

· Carefully walk, run or work on an uneven surface.

· Wear comfortable shoes according to the activity.

· Never wear high heel shoes and participate in activities for which you are not conditioned.

· Maintain your muscles strength and flexibility by regular exercise.

· After sprain take rest and avoid putting pressure by not walking or doing activities which cause pain and discomfort.

· Immediately apply crushed ice for 15-20 minutes and repeat every two to three hours to prevent and reduce swelling. Keeping ankle elevated while lying in bed helps reduce swelling.
