Mouth
care is an integral part of daily personal care. Mouth hygiene and health
directly impacts quality of life. Healthy gums are pink, firm snugly fitted
around the teeth and do not bleed easily. When teeth are not properly cleaned,
plaque forms on the surface causing irritation of the gums, making them red and
swollen known as Gingivitis. The more severe form of infection that spread
below the gums to damage the supporting tissues and bone of teeth is called
periodontitis. The germs growing on the teeth and gums produce toxins
which irritate the gums causing them to swell and bleed easily on brushing. Bad
breath and bleeding gums are the main features of gums disease. With the
passage of time tartar deposits and separates the gums from the teeth. Bad
breath that won’t go away or pus coming out from the gums, change in bite and
loose teeth suggests periodontitis. The pre-disposing factors for having gum
disease include, not cleaning teeth well, smoking, chewing tobacco, paan,
betalnut, chronic ailments like diabetes, blood cancers, vitamin deficient
diet, high sugar and carbohydrates diet. The following simple measures help to
prevent the Gingivitis;
Care of Gingivitis:
- Early treatment of gum disease is very important to prevent permanent gum damage, control infections and prevent tooth loss.
- Brush your teeth after each meal and floss at least once daily.
- Don’t smoke and use tobacco or other irritants.
- Keep good control of diabetes and other chronic ailments.
- Eat balanced diet to avoid tartar formation.
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables which are natural source of essential vitamins for healthy life.
